Match Report

Following their 3-1 away victory last week, ITFA were keen to build on this momentum and close the four-point gap to 3rd place in the table against today’s opposition. The opening exchanges were evenly balanced with neither team creating many clear-cut chances… both defences were on top and limited the attacking players to optimistic long shots on goal. The first clear cut chance came on 18 minutes when the opposition had a shot just go past the left-hand post. ITFA worked industriously and had a long shot from our Striker saved on 23 minutes.

In the closing minutes of the first half, the opposition had two chances to take the lead. The first, a free kick which just went over the bar and a clear-cut chance when they were through on goal only to see the ball slip just past the post.

The second half continued in the same vain… in the 39th minute, some good pressing from our Striker forced an error from the opposing defence which gave a chance to shoot but sadly the ball went just over the bar… ITFA continued to press forward and in the 47th minute won a free kick 25 yards from goal… One of the ITFA centre backs put a tantalising ball into the box only to see the ball touched just wide.

The 50th minute saw the best chance of the game so far. The opposition press forward and managed to get to the ITFA goal-line before putting in a great cross… only for the opposition Striker to miss from close range. The next 10 minutes saw a half chance for both teams, but neither were able to capitalise… perhaps we were heading for our first draw of the season…

Moving into the final ten minutes, ITFA continued to press high and a long ball was won by the ITFA Striker, he turned inside and hit a strong shot into the bottom right-hand corner for 1-0! The next 9 minutes were tense with the opposition pressing for the equaliser… however ITFA defended resolutely as a team and held on until the final whistle for a great win. This truly was a fantastic team performance with all 12 players playing their part in closing the gap at the top of the table!
